She has not been very loving to her own daughter Ellen either who spends a lot of time with the bats that are protected and live in the ice house.

The police have been called and DI Colin Bradshaw arrives to start the investigation, this is the second body that Georgie has uncovered and her and Colin are very good friends, not only that but when Georgie’s dog Bertie does some digging he uncovers human bones, two bodies in one day and again Georgie is caught up in the mystery again.

Georgie is very good at investigating murders herself it seems and with a bit of help from Doris she uncovers a lot about the mystery of the bones found and with more searching uncovers a lot of facts about Karen Berry and her past, all of which she passes onto Colin, but will they uncover the truth before Georgie is in danger again?

I loved this one from start to finish a one sitting read again, it is so well written and a must read for any cosy mystery lover, I was guessing till the very end and I can’t wait for book three to arrive, Thank you Kate Hardy for another brilliant story.

My thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for my digital copy to read and review.

5 stars

<span style="color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">February 20, 2024 by Storm Publishing

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-24417189330267524882024-02-13T12:50:00.000-08:002024-02-13T12:50:37.232-08:00A High Tide Murder
A High Tide Murder

Cannabis Cafe Mysteries #2

Emily George

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

Book two in this series and I fell in to it from page one, we are back in Azalea Bay with Chloe and her wonderful family and friends, her cannabis café Baked by Chloe has opened and it is a huge success, Chloe is working hard to keep up with demand and the annual surfing competition is starting, it is an exciting time until, one of the competitors is found dead.

Aaron Gill is a very good friend of Ethan another competitor, who is the brother of one of Chloe’s friends Matt, Aaron has been struggling with personal matters but is a strong contender for the competition but when Ethan, Matt and Chloe find him in his hotel room with a note and a bottle of tablets everyone is devastated but Ethan knows he did not take his own life and soon Chloe is doing what she does best and that is investigating but will she put herself in danger again?

The clues are adding up but the police are convinced that it was suicide and Chloe and Ethan know different and when a young woman is attacked things heat up and Chloe puts herself in danger will they tie up the clues and find the killer before the surf competition is over and everyone leaves town?

This is such a fabulous story fast paced and filled with awesome characters who join in with Chloe to unearth the killer, of course the food in the café is so yummy and we learn a lot about legal cannabis use and how it helps so many people. When he is invited to the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society fiftieth anniversary crime writing festival aboard The Ghan, a train trip from Darwin to Adelaide, meeting some of the best Australian mystery writers is sure to give him ideas for the new book, he takes his girlfriend Juliette as his guest.

Along with the writers there are agents, publishers, editors, reviewers and fans, Ernest’s own agent Simone is there and she is putting pressure on him about his new book, there are panels for discussion but Ernest can feel the pressure from the start after all Ernest is a debut author and his was a non-fiction story, writing a fiction story is very different, his confidence is lagging, will this trip be what helps him?

Seven authors’ start the journey only five will leave alive and one in handcuffs. When one of the authors drops dead, the other authors decide that they will be able to use their knowledge to solve the mystery but of course it also means that they have to knowledge to cause the death as well, Ernest feels like he is back on the mountain with another death and just maybe he will have another book all be it another non-fiction book and when there is another death he knows he can write another book, but the pressure is on to solve the murders.

This is another fabulous story written in the same way his first book, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone, it is witty, clever and funny as Ernest talks the readers through the clues and the ways and how’s along the way, there are some very good characters and such fabulous dialogue, you can feel the pressure Ernest is under, I didn’t work out who done it. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, it was a fabulous train trip and I highly recommend it to any mystery reader.

5 stars

<span style="color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">October 17, 2023 by Michael Joseph

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-165639797951160922023-11-30T20:37:00.000-08:002023-11-30T20:37:31.557-08:00Fatal Crossing
Fatal Crossing

Poppy McGowan Mystery Novella #2.5

Pamela Hart

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

Poppy is back and she has been shifted from her kids program at the ABC to the current affairs show as a researcher to take over from Jane Mancus who was killed in a car accident while working but was it an accident? I am glad I picked this one up and I look forward to getting around to reading more in this series, I do recommend this one to anyone who loves a good cosy mystery.

My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my copy to read and review.

4 stars

<span style="color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">August 8, 2023 by Crooked Lane Books

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-31276896323066466402023-11-02T23:18:00.006-07:002023-11-10T13:33:27.616-08:00Murder Under the Mistletoe by Liz Fielding
Reviewed by Nas Dean

A festive season filled with cheer and holiday spirit takes a chilling turn in "Murder Under the Mistletoe" by Liz Fielding. font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">This is a fabulous start to a new series, H L Marsay has bought to life the story of Dorothy Peto who was the first female superintendent of The Metropolitan Police in 1914, it is a very informative and interesting story as we learn how the women helped the police in London at the start of World War one.

Dorothy is part of a group of suffragettes and as the men are leaving to fight in the war the police are finding they are very short staffed Dorothy and her friends come up with an idea to start a volunteer group to help the police, it takes a while before the idea is accepted and the Women’s Police Volunteers WVP are started, they are tasked with helping with the refugees arriving from Belgium and moving woman of the night on.

On a night when there is a bombing raid from a Zeppelin, Dorothy finds the body of a woman in Seven Dials, it turns out she was an actress and a refugee from Belgium and she has a young daughter, Dorothy is determined to find the answers as she is sure she has been murdered and it appears that there may be a link to another actress’s death the week before. Dorothy arrives on the door of Scotland Yard and makes herself known to Inspector Derwent and tells him of her findings, they are soon helping each other out with the investigation, will Dorothy find the answers and capture the villain?

This one was such an interesting as well as compelling read, as Dorothy uncover the clues there were so many suspects along the way, Dorothy proved she is such a great investigator and to see how woman were treated in the courts back then was terrible, but it soon became evident that the W{V was a success. Dorothy and the other ladies of the WPV were fabulous characters some quirky but so good and I did really like Inspector Derwent. I highly recommend this one and am very much looking forward to book two.

My thanks to Tule Publishing for my digital copy to read and review.

4 stars

<span style="color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">October 11, 2023 by Tule Publishing

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-61512893686239892742023-09-25T17:16:00.003-07:002023-09-25T17:17:40.328-07:00The Body at Rookery Barn by Kate Hardy
Reviewed by Nas Dean

THE BODY AT ROOKERY BARN by author Kate Hardy is an October 2023 release from Storm Publishing.

Georgina is a widow and lives alone. Come along as Rosie works through many clues with the help of her friends to uncover a killer and more.

It is coming up to the fourth of July celebrations in Airlie Falls and there is a lot of baking to be done for Rosie but one order in particular for a mud cake seems more than that and when she meets the receiver of the cake things move along quickly, when that person is hit on the head with Frank investigating, it appears that the mud cake order is for a “hit” and Rosie is determined to keep the victim safe.

This one had my head turning in all directions as there appears to be more than one victim and so many suspects that Rosie is working overtime with working things through and keeping one would be victim safe, her fiancé Jonah and best friend Midge step up to spend as much time with Rosie as possible to keep her safe these are dangerous times with what appears to be a lot of money involved as Rosie investigates the Clymont family.

Of course her friends at Riverbend are up to no good this time they have found the shopping channel but they are always a help to Rosie with information and with so many activities for Fourth of July including an Elvis impersonation contest, things are really getting hectic, will Rosie find the killer or killers in time before someone else loses their life.

I loved this one, I laughed, I cheered them on as I read this one in one sitting there was no way I was putting it down till Rosie worked it all out because I didn’t and the ending oh it bought tears to my eyes so beautiful and fitting, I can’t wait for the next book. There is also a personal investigation going on at the time which adds to the story, a story not to be missed.

Getting to know Hazel, Betty and Irene was a joy they all have such different personalities but work well together Hazel always the understanding one who knows how to calm everyone, Betty the worrier and so good at taking notes and Irene what can I say about Irene and her holy slippers and rough and ready ways, they make a team and will never give up till the crooks are caught and I was cheering them on.

I loved this book so much from start to finish, so many twists and so many laughs along the way, I do remember tea ladies and I always loved them and the setting was fabulous I remember that area a little after that time, this is one that I would highly recommend, don’t miss out on some laughs and seeing how these tea ladies get themselves out of hot water

5 stars

<span style="color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif;">April 12, 2023 by Penguin Random House

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-7787184230099307832023-04-26T15:49:00.001-07:002023-04-26T15:49:18.815-07:00The Feathered Nest
The Feathered Nest

The Thornton Mysteries #4

Ellen Read

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

Another thoroughly enjoyable read in this series and this time we are on Norfolk Island and there is a lot of history to learn about while Alexandra solves another mystery, there is no stopping her once she gets a clue she is like a true mystery sleuth.

A surprise birthday present for Lexie is a trip to Norfolk Island and an expedition to research and save the Green Parrot and other endangered species on the beautiful island as photographer, she is thrilled and she is also given a beautiful Black Pearl broach the origins of the pearl are from Tahiti but hers was bought in Hong Kong by her Great, Great Grandfather and is a family heirloom.

Just as they are leaving they find out that the island has just had its first murder this of course intrigues Lexi and she has lots of questions. Her and Edie are also researching the island and discover that a lot of the inhabitants are descendants of the Bounty Mutineers and their Tahitian Brides, this is going to be a very interesting trip.

Meeting the people who live there is an eye opener as they all seem to have strange nick names and Lexi’s black pearl broach courses a bit of a stir when she wears it, of course Lexi is asking lots of questions about the murder and discovers that there was another sudden death and when tensions flare between workers from the expedition and a couple of the workers on the island, Lexi is after the truth and soon there are another couple of deaths, and Lexi puts herself in danger to get to the bottom of the mystery.

There is a lot going on in this story and lots of interesting history to learn along the way and of course I loved catching up with Edie, Benedict and Thomas they all add so much to the story and the people of Norfolk Island were a fabulous characters that I really enjoyed getting to now.

I do highly recommend this story I loved the setting and the era and of course the mystery that had me turning the pages and guessing to the very end.

I am a big fan of Liz Fielding’s romances and now I can say I am a big fan of her cosy mysteries, this is her first foray into cosy mysteries and it is fabulous, awesome characters, fabulous setting and it moves so well and it had me guessing till the very end and it was not what I thought at all, this is one to pick up you will not want to put it down once you start.

Abby Finch is living in the quiet village of Maybridge, with her three children, she is going through a divorce at the moment from Howard, she runs a gardening business in the town and is very good at what she does, she is working on the garden of her soon to be ex-husbands family home, Linton Lodge digging up an old rose when she discovers bones belonging to a baby, stunned and shocked she rings the police, she can’t get hold of Howard as he is having a weekend in Paris with the soon to be new pregnant Mrs. Finch.

Abby will do whatever it takes to keep things as quiet as possible for her children’s sakes and she also knows how much it could affect Howards political ambitions when all of this hits the papers, Abby then runs into and old school friend Jake who she has not seen since her last year at school they have a connection and when Jake hears what has happened he is determined to help Abby.

Howard arrives home and is furious and blames Abby for it all, tempers are fraying and then Abby finds Howard dead in the same rose garden, killed with her spade and Abby becomes number one suspect, Abby is determined to find out what truly happened and when digging she uncovers some secrets that go back many years.

This story had me turning the pages I could not put it down it was a one sitting read for me, it is just so good, so well written I felt like I was in the village as everything was happening and there are quite a few suspects in my opinion, it is moving all of the time, I loved Abby and her friends who stepped up to help and the police are so good.

This is a story that I would highly recommend and I really hope that there will be lots more cosy mysteries from Liz Fielding, thank you so much, this is one for the keeper shelf.

My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

<div style="color: #181818; Another young German man is murdered in a small town and Alexandra heightens her sleuthing abilities, she is so stubborn.

I thoroughly enjoyed this instalment, filled with danger and tension as Alexandra uncovers more than she thought with an old family secret coming out, people’s emotions run high as I was turning the pages to uncover the truth of the mystery, I am really enjoying this series I do love the 1920’s and all of the glamour that goes with this era, a well written story that is sure to keep any amateur sleuth guessing.

4 stars

<span style="color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">March 21, 2021 by Crimson Cloak Publishing

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-79645642861609520512023-02-15T18:49:00.001-08:002023-02-15T18:49:25.184-08:00Half-Baked Murder
Half-Baked Murder

Emily George

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

Emily George has created a new series for lovers of cozy mysteries, set in the beautiful beachside town of Azalea Bay in California, we get to know Chloe Barnes, pastry chef extraordinaire who’s life has suddenly changed bringing her home from Paris where she has lived and worked to make a name for herself for the past five years, but with her wedding cancelled and her dearly loved grandmother sick Chloe is home and determined to do well.

With all of her training in Paris and the help from her quirky aunt Dawn Chloe decides to open a cannabis café in the small town, this is going to be a lot of work but she knows that it will help a lot of people as she adds her special touch to pot brownies and creates the most gorgeous of cannabis treats.

A couple of days home and she has a run in with a past acquaintance who ends up dead in the park the next day and the police suspect Aunty Dawn as the killer and there is no way Chloe is going to stand by and let their family name have mud thrown at it. Of course the Fab four who live at Riverbend are very willing to help as well and there are plenty of clues and people to question, will Rosie put herself in danger and will she keep up with all of her fabulous cooking?

I loved this one from page one, I loved being back in Airlie Falls and catching up with the wonderful people who live there, picking up a book in this series is like walking into a family reunion and it had everything a great cosy mystery should have, it is witty filled with mystery a touch of romance and it had me guessing till the very end and wow I didn’t see that coming. I would highly recommend this it is a fabulous story. Rosie has been invited to be bridesmaid for an old college friend but this means going on a trip to Colorado, firstly for a pre-wedding party, which turns into a very dangerous party.

It is close to Christmas time and Rosie is very busy but she makes the trip to Colorado after talking to the Bride who seems very nervous, arriving at the beautiful lodge for the pre wedding party is an eye opener for Rosie, she knows no one but the bride and she doesn’t know her really well, but the venue is beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Rosie starts to meet some of the guests and let’s say they leave a lot to be desired and Rosie is feeling very uncomfortable, the night of the fancy dress party with costumes organised for everyone turns ugly when one of the guests is found dead and it appears that the intended victim was supposed to be the groom things heat up for Rosie. When a blizzard arrives and there is no way anyone can come and go Rosie knows she has to start her investigation, but she is really missing her team of helpers from home.

Excitement abounds when the fab four from the retirement home in Arlie Falls arrive, these ladies are the best and although shocked Rosie is pleased the extra help will be much appreciated, especially when another body is found, there are many clues to be found and many secrets are unfolding about this family and the people there and Rosie is determined to uncover the truth and hope that she stays out of danger.

I loved this book so much so many twists and turns I had no idea who did it until the very end, Kaz Delaney knows how to write a fabulous mystery, I love the characters so much, the setting was awesome, it is witty and a must read, a real page turner and one that I would highly recommend, thank you Kaz Delaney I am really looking forward to the next one.

5 stars

<ul class="CollapsableList" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">October 19, 2022 by Tule Publishing

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-7524390561711069702022-09-15T18:34:00.001-07:002022-09-15T18:34:07.200-07:00Fall and Foul Play
Fall and Foul Play

Lana Honeywell Mystery Series #1

Megan Mayfair

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

We met Lana in the novella Sunshine and Suspicion and I loved her, she is taking a year off her busy high profile job in the city as a publicist for celebrities and this is after she has broken up with her actor boyfriend, it is time for Lana to find herself and rest, she has a perfect little house by the side of the lake in the small town of Cherry Grove.

Lana is making friends in the town and is asked to join the local hockey team Lana is looking forward to getting to know Wyatt much better and have some fun, but when a member of the opposite team is found dead in the club house the finger is pointed at the members of the Cherry Grove hockey team and Lana is determined to find the killer with Wyatt’s help.

Uncovering the truth also uncovers many things that have been kept secret from the past but nothing will deter Lana not even the taunts from her fellow team members, the more unravelling she does the more danger she puts herself in, will she be the next victim or will she find the killer?

I am thoroughly enjoying this new series from Megan Mayfair, they are filled with characters who are all have a part to play in the town and I love Lana’s way of uncovering clues even when she puts herself in danger, she never gives up. You will need to read this one and the series because I do highly recommend them, I have thoroughly enjoyed them all and loved this one and I am sure there is another one coming and I can’t wait to read it, Beth Prentice’s stories are must reads they are page turners.

My thanks to the author for my digital copy to read and review.

5 stars

<ul class="CollapsableList" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4f4f4d; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Montserrat, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">September 30, 2022 by Witchy Mysteries

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-65194001492883807012022-08-28T14:46:00.001-07:002022-08-28T14:46:20.169-07:00The Hollyday Spirit
The Hollyday Spirit

A Dandelion Ponds Mystery #2

Beth Prentice

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

This is another fantastic story in this series it is fun, heartwarming and a page turner. I loved being back in Dandelion Ponds with Daisy, such a fun and lovable person who is caught between our world and the spirit world and Charlie what a guy, what a hero he is and him and Daisy make a fabulous investigating couple, if you haven’t met them yet, then you should and have lots of fun along the way.

It is Christmas time and Daisy and Charlie are investigating a murder, and the main suspect is Santa and with so many around at this time of the year it is not going to be easy. There are a few twists and turns in this one, which kept me guessing and on my toes as the story moved along.
Beth Prentice has penned another magical story with characters that are spirits and are the most lovable people, this is an easy and quick read that is sure to make any reader smile, and it certainly did me there are some very heartwarming bits in this one and lots of laughs. I do look forward to more in this series, The Ghost Detectives are sure to help solve a lot of mysteries.

Daisy and Charlie are getting closer all the time but with Daisy being a part spirit it is difficult but I am sure they are going to work this all out and have so much fun along the way, I loved this one from start to finish and can’t highly recommend this one.

Thank you MS Prentice for my copy to read. Clara can’t help herself after the hair salon is broken into on the night of the masked ball, and she discovers Ollie dead and some more evidence.

Senior Constable Adam Billings is throwing himself into the investigation to try and discover the truth, he is also thinking constantly about Clara and worrying whether or not Lucas is the right person for her. Convinced that Emerald and Ollie’s deaths are linked he then finds himself in trouble and in hospital, this pushes Clara to dig deeper and of course more danger.

Clara is good at investigating murders and again uncovers the killer but it seems her premonitions are starting up again she loves Lucas but with Adam so close things are getting more troublesome for her. This is really a great series with wonderful characters and a fabulous setting, I was guessing till close to the end, Megan Mayfair writes wonderful stories that pull her readers in and keep them turning the pages, I can’t wait for the next one to see how life turns out for Clara. I do highly recommend this story and the series.

My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.

5 stars

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif;">Published June 24th 2022

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547791895120527622.post-23046746351857153022022-06-14T21:22:00.001-07:002022-06-14T21:22:14.260-07:00Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murders
Mysteries, Midsummer Sun and Murders

Anthology

Reviewed by Helen

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">

Sunshine and Suspicion

Megan Mayfair

Lana has moved to the small town of Cherry Grove for one year of peace and quiet to get her life back on track after a bad break-up with her fiancé she is over the high powered world of PR, it is time to relax and get her Zen back and that means no men either. font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">This is fun, witty and a very different murder mystery, reading the prologue had me smiling and eager to get started and meet the Cunningham family and the narrator Ernest Cunningham, Ern is a writer of books who help authors write mystery and crime stories, this shows throughout the book, but his family is a mystery, come along for the Cunningham family reunion and see if you can uncover the mystery through many plots even the ones with big holes.

Ern calls himself a reliable narrator and he is quite open with his honesty throughout the book, one thing he is not looking forward to is this family reunion, the family is made up of some very different people who all have different ideas about the past and the now. They all are heading for snow country and when a storm arrives and a dead body is found Ern is not impressed especially as the dead body tally adds up.

But there is a lot to uncover for this family going back thirty five years and much conflict abounds in the telling of this story, as we get to know the family I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it to any reader who loves a good mystery, I was guessing till the very end, this is a very entertaining book.

My thanks to the publisher for my copy to read and review.

4 stars

<span face="Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif" style="color: #333333; font-size: 12px;">Published March 29th 2022 by Penguin Random House Australia

Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03984438742736003285noreply@blogger.com
